The Land

Motherwood Sanctuary is 35 acres of rare pristine wilderness in the Katuah bioregion of Appalachia, one of the most biodiverse spots in the world. Like a rainforest in the summer, an explosion of color in the fall, a neon green floral paradise in the spring, this land is only 20 minutes from town.

This place is so special that as soon as we laid eyes on it, we knew we had to move here after lifetimes spent in California. We thought, this land is where we want to spend the rest of our lives! And moved our lives across the country.

There are ancient primeval forest slopes and about 13 acres of cleared pasture, from rolling hills to beautiful meadows nestled among what everyone says is one of the best views in the world. Herbs, berries, wild edibles; majestic poplars, black locusts, oaks, dogwoods, maples, and an unusually large amount of sassafras. Wild animal sounds you may never have heard before. Different wildflowers every week. A vast sky changing every moment.

Our goal in life is to protect this little slice of wilderness for the future. It feels very wild because there are few humans around, and it backs up to hundreds of acres of protected wilderness. It’s as beautiful as any park but much more private. It’s a place to hug trees, meditate, hike, sunbathe, listen to the winds sing to the crickets, contemplate beauty, release trauma, and renew oneself.

There are currently about 15 minutes of trails on the property, with more in the works. A longer trail is via walking up the road from the land.

We have a temple that can be rented for indoor ceremonies; a gorgeous meadow with firepit and outdoor kitchen that can be rented for ceremonies and events; a hobbit house; a small cabin; a dome; and a well-preserved tobacco barn on the land. The hobbit house, Hobbithenge, is a gorgeous structure built all from local materials and with exquisite craftsmanship, featured in the news.
